Elderly couple seek counselling from DV Unit after New Year’s Day dispute
KINGSTON, Jamaica – An elderly married couple were referred to the Domestic Violence Intervention Unit for counselling when they appeared before Senior Parish Judge Paula Blake-Powell at the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, the husband is accused of physically harming his wife during a dispute on January 1, 2024.
The couple, who still live together, were encouraged to seek assistance to assist in uncovering what the judge described as the “deepest source of their problems.”
Indicating that she despises hearing of domestic situations turned ugly, Blake-Powell urged the pair to take advantage of counselling.
“I really don’t like to see certain things in the news that could have been avoided. Please get some help to find the source of the problem going forward,” the judge said as the wife indicated that she and her husband had decided to settle the matter amicably.
The matter was adjourned as the couple indicated they would seek the assistance of counsellors at the Constant Spring Domestic Violence Intervention Unit.
