Will Kingston College retain their title at Champs 2024?
DEFENDING champions Kingston College (KC) once again sit in the driver’s seat for this year’s Boys’ Championships. The team from 2A North Street will be seeking to get their 35th hold on the Mortimer Geddes Trophy — and by all indications, they are the team to beat.
Having taken honours at the Corporate Area Championships with 461 points, the purple and white train will be hard to stop as we have seen this season the quality throughout all the classes, both on track and in the field. Their nearest rival at the regional championships was Calabar High School who were almost 80 points adrift of the massive “Fortis” tally. Added to this, with Jamaica College having injury concerns KC may very well have a story plot set for their triumph.
But while the signs point North, I would caution any declaration of a sure win for the famed “Purples”, lest we forget the events of 2017 when, as favourites, KC lost to Calabar by three points in the final event, this after being earlier hit with championship-ending injuries to key stars Jhevaughn Matherson and Wayne Pinnock. I am certain that even as brave as the KC diehards are, they too will be guarded but optimistic of their chances for a three-peat.

Unless there is a massive upset of epic proportions this will be KC’s third-straight hold on the Mortimer Geddes Trophy and 35th overall, and by Saturday’s final session the race could be all but sewn up. As they have shown all year and if the Corporate Area Championships is any indicator, KC is well-rounded and should win comfortably.

A three-peat is the hunt for KC over the five days of championships. The North Street boys are in the driver’s seat and should walk away as champions on Saturday night to cement their 35th overall title.
The seniors are expected to lead the way with their depth and quality. The Leaford Grant-coached team is also high on confidence following a commanding team performance at the Corporate Area Champs.
