Hydel first-timer Abigail Campbell ‘very happy’ with golden impact

Abigail Campbell’s first appearance at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships in the Hydel High blue was a golden one as she ran a personal best 52.27 seconds to win the Girls’ Class One 400m at the National Stadium on Thursday.

After missing last season because she transferred from Ferncourt High — where she had won two gold medals — Campbell was in imperious form as she dominated the competition. She beat the Edwin Allen High pair of Tony-Ann Beckford (53.22) and Natasha Fox who took the bronze with 54.48.

“I am very happy, very happy. This is my first time representing Hydel High and I won, so I am happy,” she told the Jamaica Observer.

“I am happy for myself and, of course, for my mother as well.”

She added she had been hoping to go as fast as “maybe 51 seconds” in the race which saw her jump to number four in the World Athletics Under-20 rankings.

Muschett High’s Shanoya Douglas dominated the Class 2 final, winning in 53.03, her fourth race since the championships started on Tuesday. Her time was just shy of her personal best 52.96 set on Wednesday.

As she had done in the two previous rounds in the 400m, Douglas took the race by the scruff of the neck at the 250-metre mark and ran away from the field as Edwin Allen’s Kelly Ann Carr, who was fourth last year, took the silver with 53.58. Hydel High’s Nastassia Fletcher was third in 53.98.

Jody-Ann Daley of Hydel High, who won last year, finished outside the medal places in fourth in 55.24.

Hydel High’s Sashana Johnson ran a personal best 54.59 to win the Class 3 final, beating Holmwood Technical’s Tracey-Ann Evans (55.28) and Port Antonio High’s Kevina Bourne was third in 56.78, all new lifetime best marks.

In arguably the best performance of the championships so far, Hydel High’s Zavien Bernard broke the Class 3 high jump record with a clearance of 1.83m, breaking the 1.80m set in 2018 by Shantae Foreman, then of Excelsior High.

In a masterclass demonstration, Bernard who was winning the title in back-to-back years, had one failure, at 1.68m. She needed one attempt to clear 1.81m then improved the new mark to 1.83m again on her first attempt.

St Catherine High’s Gabriella Treasure was second with 1.68m with Immaculate Conception’s Grace-Ann Bailey taking third with 1.65m.

Zoelle Jamel of Immaculate Conception celebrated her birthday with a gold medal in the javelin open, throwing a personal best 42.63m to improve on her third place from last year.

Edwin Allen High’s Alliah Gittens took the silver medal with 42.57m, and Hydel High’s Natassia Burrell, who was second last year, got the bronze with 40.05m.

St Jago High’s Jenella Canns, who on the Class 3 gold last year, struck gold in her first year in Class 2, winning the long jump with 5.89m done in the opening round.

Jaeda Robinson of Immaculate Conception was second with 5.79m and Rhianna Chambers of St Catherine High was third with 5.55m.

St Catherine High’s Tshani Armstrong won the Class 4 long jump gold medal with 5.25m (-0.8m/), beating St Andrew High’s Jowana Pennant- 5.13m (0.9m/s) and Hydel High’s Daina Black- 5.09m (1.0m/s).

Aaliyah Baker of Hydel; Thieanna-Lee Terrelonge of Edwin Allen; Natrece East of Wolmer’s Girls’; and Teixiera Johnson of Hydel High School — all 100m champions on Wednesday — remained on course for the sprint double after qualifying for the semi-finals of the 200m in their respective classes on Thursday morning.

Baker won her heat in Class 1 in 24.88 seconds (-1.9m/s), while Edwin Allen’s Jounee Armstrong ran 24.41 (0.5m/s) to lead the qualifying, followed by St Catherine High’s Kaycian Johnson, who clocked 24.43 seconds (-0.8m/s), and Trezequet Taylor of Edwin Allen with 25.05 seconds (-1.7m/s).

Terrelonge was easy in winning her Class 2 first-round race in 24.74 (-2.4m/s), the third best time. The 100m silver medallist Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High led with 24.12 seconds (-2.7m/s), followed by Muschett High’s Douglas with 24.68 seconds (-1.4m/s).

East’s 24.85 (-0.8m/s) was good enough for third best in Class 3 as St Jago High’s Shannia Campbell ran 24.76 (0.2m/s) to lead the way, followed by Kevina Bourne of Port Antonio High who ran 24.77 (-0.6m/s).

Hydel High’s Johnson led the Class 4 qualifying with 25.28 (-0.6m/s), ahead of her teammate Tyecia McDonald who timed 25.34 (-1.0m/s). Convent of Mercy Alpha Academy’s Azaria Harris was next with 25.74 (-0.8m/s) and Edwin Allen’s Makaila McDonald clocked 26.01 (-1.3m/s).

Holmwood Technical’s Jovi Rose and Edwin Allen High’s Denique Palmer, who were second in the Class 2 and 3 1500m finals, respectively on Wednesday, are seeking redemption in the 800m after advancing from the first round on Thursday.

Rose ran 2:19.86 minutes to win the first heat in Class 2, while Edwin Allen’s Horecia Love, who ran 2:19.43, Kededra Coombs of St Jago High and Andrene Peart of Holmwood, are also through to the semis.

Palmer led the Class 3 qualifying after she ran 2:18.56, followed by her teammate Kevongaye Fowler ( 2:18.91).

Edwin Allen High’s Dionjah Shaw will try to defend her Class 2 discus throw title after she led the preliminaries with 42.80m. Clarendon College’s Marla-Kay Lampart was also over 42 metres with 42.27m, while St Jago High’s Rehanna Biggs was next with 39.77m.

All the top contenders have qualified for the 4x100m finals which will be run on Saturday’s final day; St Jago lead the Class 2 qualifying with 45.33 seconds, followed by Wolmer’s Girls’ (45.86), Edwin Allen (46.20) and Hydel (46.59).

St Jago were also fastest in Class 2 with (46.35), followed by Immaculate Conception (46.52), Edwin Allen High (46.71), Hydel (46.96) and Holmwood (47.19).

Hydel ran 48.10 to lead Class 4; Edwin Allen (48.40), Holmwood (48.58) and Mount Alvernia High (50.25).
