#Champs2024: History for Muschett High in Class 2 200m
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Muschett High’s Johan-Ramaldo Smythe and Shanoya Douglas created history after sweeping the Class 2 boys’ and girls’ 200m finals.
The great showcase unfolded at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships on Saturday.
In one of the most highly anticipated races of the Championships, it was Douglas who reigned supreme. She lined up against a stacked field but powered through in 23.93 to add another gold to her 400m win.
Another race favourite, Edwin Allen’s Theianna-Lee Terrelonge, had to settle for silver in 24.31. Hydel’s Shemonique Hazel won bronze in 24.38.
Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High, who was tapped for a podium finish, was disqualified due to a false start.
In the boys’ equivalent of the event, Smythe claimed gold in 21.35 seconds. He finished ahead of Jabari Matheson of William Knibb (21.64) and Jamaica College’s Malique Dennis (21.87).
In a tough Class 1 final, Kingston College’s (KC) Amal Glasgow topped the field in 21.22 seconds. Gary Card of Wolmer’s Boys’ won silver in 21.23 while Marcinho Rose, also of KC, finished third in 21.24.
Mario Ross of Wolmer’s Boys’ became the seventh double gold medallist at the Championships after clocking a personal best of 22.21 for the Class 3 title. Ched Brown of Calabar High clocked 22.54 for silver while Jamaica College’s Oneil Lawrence copped bronze in 22.73.
Additionally, Alliah Baker of Hydel High produced a lifetime best of 23.89 to win the Class 1 girls’ final. She was followed by Bridgeport High’s Brittney McCormack (24.44) and Titchfield High’s Chevauna Grant (24.26).
Wolmerian Natrece East, the 100m champion, was determined to defend her Class 3 title and achieved that goal with a 24.29 clocking. Immaculate Conception’s Kimberly Wright took silver in 24.70 while Hydel’s Sashana Johnson won bronze (24.80).
In addition, Teixiera Johnson completed the sprint double in Class 4, having won the 100m on Wednesday. She crossed the line ahead of her teammate Tyecia McDonald (25.91) and Womerian Mick-Kayla Gardener (26.11).
