Digicel Group poised for Corporate Domino League semis
The Digicel Group Domino team is in an excellent position to advance to the semi-finals of the Winners Corporate Domino League with a 85-79 win over Bammaz Auto Shop in the fifth round last Friday.
The win moved the Digicel Group squad into second place in Group B with 11 points from five games. Bammaz Auto Shop, which is out of contention for a semi-final sport, sits at the bottom of the four-team table with six points.
Spectrum Enterprise leads the group with 12 points from four games, following a 93-76 victory over Top View Liquor and Variety Store last Saturday and Mystix Sports Bar and Grill on Hagley Park Road. Top View Liquor and Variety Store ranks third with seven points from four games.
The Digicel Group, headquarters at 14 Ocean Boulevard, was taken aback when Bammaz Auto Shop jumped out to a 10-point lead early in the competition. However, as the sides settled in, the home team rediscovered its rhythm midway through the first half, cutting down Bammaz Auto Shop’s lead. At half-time, Bammaz led 46-43.
Digicel Group was the first to strike on the resumption, making a clear sweep of all four tables twice to take the lead for the first time in the match. Bammaz Auto Shop responded well by dominating all tables and regained the lead. Bammaz, at one point, had a eight-point lead with 15 minutes remaining in the game but a late rally from Digicel Group saw them taking the lead once again and holding it to the line.
Digicel’s free scoring form was highlight by the pair of Jeneard Williams and Michael James who score nine unanswered point.
In Group A, Covenant Insurance Brokers (CIB) and National Commercial Bank (NCB) have both advanced to the next round. CIB leads the group with 14 points, the same as NCB, but has a higher win-game point average.
Kingston Bookshop is third on seven points, with Crystal Network Solutions (CNS) at the bottom on five points. Last week, CIB overcame an 18-point deficit to defeat CNS 103-89 at home on 8 Norwood Road, while NCB edged home team Kingston Bookshop 85-82 on 80 Kings Street in downtown Kingston.
This week’s matchups will pit Top View Liquor and Variety Store against Digicel Group in a must-win game for the former at the Ministry of Education and Youth, 2-4 National Heroes’ Circle on Thursday, April 18. Spectrum Enterprise and Bammaz Auto Shop will play their other Group B game on Friday, April 19 at Mystix Sports Bar and Grill.
Both Group A games will be played on Friday. NCB hosts CIB in a top-of-the-table duel at the Wellness Centre on 13-15 Phoenix Avenue, while CNS hosts Kingston Bookshop at Mystix Sports Bar and Grill.
All matches begin at 6:30 pm.
