$53 million to municipal corporations for Labour Day
PORT ANTONIO, Portland — Municipal corporations across Jamaica will be allocated a combined total of $53 million to bankroll Labour Day projects.
The announcement was made by Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie during an address at the Portland Municipal Corporation’s monthly meeting on Thursday.
Labour Day will be observed on May 23, 2024. This year’s focus will be on providing ramps in public spaces.
The minister stressed the importance of ensuring that the physically challenged are able to gain access, as outlined in the Disabilities Act which took effect on February 14, 2022. Members of the disabled community have consistently complained that there is not enough being done to implement the changes needed and enforce the law.
“I am hoping that your building and planning committee will pay attention to building applications, especially those of public access, to see that the requisite provisions are in place to facilitate persons who are physically challenged,” urged McKenzie on Thursday.
