Susannah Salmon, promoter of the inaugural AfroJam Jamaica weekend, says this year’s series of events will showcase the best of African and Caribbean culture.

“We wanted to create a space where both cultures’ rich traditions, music, and heritage could be showcased and appreciated. We aim to foster a sense of unity and cultural exchange, highlighting the connections and shared history between these regions,” Salmon told the Jamaica Observer.

AfroJam Jamaica will take place between August 22-25 in Negril. A neon glow party will be held on August 22, while a retro bash will be held the following day. On August 24, there will be a brunch beach party, and the weekend will conclude with a sophisticated event called Golden Noir.

As a first-generation Sierra Leonean living in Jamaica for the past 10 years, Salmon, a travel agent, wanted to create a destination weekend that celebrates the rich cultures of Africa and the Caribbean.

She noted that planning for the series has so far been a success.

“Our team has been working diligently to ensure every detail is handled. Despite some challenges, such as the recent hurricane, we have managed to stay on track. We are committed to delivering a well-organised and enjoyable event for everyone involved,” the promoter added.

Attendees will have the chance to see live performances by Yung Wylin and JCalm, with an Afrobeat headliner to be announced soon. AfroJam Jamaica will also feature DJs from different parts of Africa, including DJ Ipod, DJ Afrik, DJ Tobias, and our local DJ Johnny Blaze.

“[T]his event promises a unique and enjoyable experience… with live performances from top artistes and disc jockeys; a vibrant atmosphere, and a chance to connect with the community, it is an opportunity not to be missed… Furthermore, a portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to a local non-profit and a non-profit in Sierra Leone, allowing us to give back to the community and support meaningful causes,” she said.
