Cancer survivor heads to Paris courtesy of Red Stripe
IN a heart-warming twist of fate, Johnell Benson, a devoted Red Stripe fan, discovered that a simple act would lead her to an unforgettable journey.
While shopping and stocking up on Red Stripe beer for her household, Benson’s attention was caught by the ‘Guh fi Gold and Glory Olympic’ campaign banner. Eyeing the enticing $50,000 cash prize, she entered the competition without hesitation. To her surprise, she won the ultimate prize — a trip to Paris. Thankfully, this trip to Paris also came just in time for the 14th anniversary of Benson’s cancer-free journey.
“When I entered the competition I thought the $50,000 cash prize would be nice; I didn’t even see the other prizes Red Stripe was offering,” Benson recalled with laughter.
While trying her luck for the cash prize Benson never imagined she would be rewarded with something even greater than $50,000. She received a call on July 5, however, informing her she had won the competition’s ultimate prize. This way, she can cheer on Jamaica’s athletes at the 2024 Olympics in person.
“The call came when I was in PriceSmart, and all I could do was cry. I was so happy because not only did I just win a trip to Paris, but I am also celebrating 14 years of being cancer-free so you can imagine how much this means to me,” said Benson, her voice filled with emotion.
Reflecting on her journey, Benson stated how perfect this trip is for marking another cancer-free year. She sees this gift as a celebration of life and resilience, a testament to her strength over the years.
“It couldn’t have come at a better time. I feel favoured because many people must have entered but I was chosen at a significant time. My children told me, ‘Mommy, you are the best person to go because you are a happy person and you are going to make sure everyone has fun’, ” Benson added.
Benson, known for her generosity and service as a past Kiwanis Club president was surrounded by elated friends and family. They celebrate her win, a testament to the strength of their community bonds.
“They know how much she deserves this special opportunity and are thrilled to see her cherish this gift as she looks forward to embarking on the trip to Paris with the nine other lucky winners of the Trip to Paris Olympics, courtesy of Red Stripe’s Guh fi Gold and Glory Olympic campaign,” said aid Red Stripe Brand Manager Nathan Nelms.
“It is stories like these that motivate Red Stripe to continue serving the people of Jamaica. We are delighted to have played a role in Johnell Benson’s journey as she takes on this experience which, for many, is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“I am sure she, like the other winners, will have a great time cheering on our athletes as they Guh fi Gold and Glory at the 2024 Paris Olympics,” said Nelms.
Benson, overwhelmed with joy and gratitude, encouraged Red Stripe to continue its good work.
“I am beyond excited about the trip and deeply grateful to Red Stripe for this incredible opportunity. Keep up the good work,” said Benson.
