Earthquake Units says Jamaica has experienced 165 earthquakes so far this year

KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) – The Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus says Jamaica has experienced approximately 165 local earthquakes so far this year.

According to the earthquake unit, of the 165 earthquake events only 10 were felt, the latest of which occurred on Friday morning. That quake had a magnitude of 5.3 and was felt islandwide.

The epicentre was located approximately 6 kilometres northwest of Golden Spring in the eastern parish of St Andrew.

Friday’s quake brings to 19 the number of seismic events experienced by Jamaica so far this month, although only one of the 19 was reportedly felt by residents before Friday’s quake.

That minor earthquake had a magnitude of 2.9 and was felt on August 12, in the town of Buff Bay, in the eastern parish of Portland and surrounding areas.
