Salmon, Clarke win 400m hurdles at Zurich Diamond League meet
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Olympic finalists Shiann Salmon and Roshawn Clarke won their respective 400m hurdles races at Thursday’s Weltklasse Diamond League meeting in Zurich.
They were among a number of Jamaicans who booked their places in next week’s two-day finals in Brusells, Belgium.
Salmon ran a personal best 52.97 seconds to ‘upset’ the field in the women’s 400m hurdles and Clarke ran a season’s best 47.49 seconds with both accumulating enough points to qualify for the final.
Salmon used a late burst over the final two hurdles to get the win, lowering her previous personal best 53.13 seconds set in the semis at the Olympics.
Her time saw her move into fifth all times on the Jamaican ranking, past Janieve Russell who was fourth with 54.75 seconds with Andrenette Knight sixth with 55.42 seconds.
Olympic silver medallist Anna Cockrell of the USA was second with 53.17 seconds and Shamier Little third with 54.07 seconds.
Clarke ran a season’s best 47.49 seconds to beat Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba, taking second in 47.58 seconds and Estonia’s Rasmus Magi was third in 48.02 seconds.
Wayne Pinnock also won his first Diamond League meet with 8.18m (-0.9m/s) in long jump, holding off Olympic and World championships gold medallist Miltiadis Tentoglou- Greece- 8.02m (-1.2m/s).
Pinnock finally bested Tentoglou after being passed by the Greek in a number of competitions including the World Championships in Budapest last year and the Olympic Games last month.
Simon Ehammer of Switzerland was third with 7.98m (0.2m/s), Tajay Gayle was sixth with 7.85m (-2.0m/s) while Carey McLeod did not start.
Hansle Parchment, who had already secured his spot in the Diamond League final, was fourth in the 110m hurdles, running a season’s best 13.18 seconds (-0.3m/s) as Olympic champion Grant Holloway of the USA won with 12.99 seconds. France’s Sasha Zhoya ran a lifetime best 13.10 seconds for third and American Freddie Crittenden was fourth with 13.16 seconds.
Olympic bronze medallist Rasheed Broadbell was a late withdrawal.
Danielle Williams was sixth in the 100m hurdles with 12.57 seconds (0.8m/s) as Diamond League leader Jasmine Camacho Quinn of Puerto Rico won with 12.36 seconds, beating France’s Cyrene Samba-Mayela- 12.40 seconds.
Meanwhile, Olympic champion Masai Russell of the USA was third with 12.47 seconds.
Tia Clayton was sixth in the women’s 100m, with 11.09 seconds (0.1m/s) as Olympic Games silver medallist Sha’Carri Richardson of the USA won with 10.84 seconds, beating Olympic champion Julien Alfred of St Lucia (10.88 seconds) and Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain-10.89 seconds.
Lamara Distin placed eighth in the women’s high jump with a clearance of 1.85m.
Olympic Games bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell was eighth in the men’s shot put, throwing 20.19m as American Ryan Crouser was an easy winner with 22.66m, well ahead of Leonardo Fabbri of Italy who threw 21.86m and Payton Otterdahl of the USA was third with 21.38m.
