TOBA Mixed Sale churns out $105m

The 2024 Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) Mixed Sale, held at Caymanas Park on Sunday (November 10), exceeded expectations, generating a $105 million.

This remarkable achievement underscored the resilience and growth of Jamaica’s horse racing industry.

The event showcased 95 exceptional lots, comprising 74 yearlings, 11 two-year-olds, seven horses of racing age, and three weanlings. Despite 22 withdrawals, including Orange Valley Estate Limited’s entire 10-lot consignment, and seven unsold horses, 66 impressive sales cemented the event’s success.

The 2024 sales surpassed last year’s total of $86.1 million by $18.9 million, marking a significant milestone. Notably, the 2002 Mixed Sales had reached $155 million.

Two outstanding horses captured attention — Lot #45: a stunning bay filly by Conquest Cherimarsh out of Miss Chestnut foaled on March 5, 2023, and consigned by Patrick Woolcock sold for $5.6 million; and Lot #16: a majestic chestnut colt by Bern Identity out of Mete-Orite foaled on April 29, 2023, and consigned by Chevan Maharaj, fetched $5.5 million,

TOBA President Howard Hamilton praised breeders, owners and supporters.

“It was an excellent sale…we sold over $105 million, a record for us.” Hamilton emphasised Jamaica’s breeding industry’s strength, expressing optimism for future growth.

“Our attempt of having a mixed sale was not successful as I thought it would have been but everything went well. I want to thank all of the people who came out and support the sale and hopefully they will continue to support it in the future.

“Two horses sold for over $5 million was an excellent exhibition of the value of the horses that the breeders have put forward. I am particularly pleased with the
Miss Chestnut horse that went for $5.6 million. The beauty of the breeder industry, I think is very strong,” Hamilton told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
