Asian man fined $50,000 for bribing police
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A man of Asian descent was fined $50,000 or 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to bribing a policeman with $3,000 when he turned up at the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
Jian Xin He was charged after he told a police constable that he would give him $3,000 to ignore a previous offence. The constable refused and Jian Xin He was arrested.
Jian Xin He, who relied on a translator to relay what the judge said, pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined.
Before handing down her judgment Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell told the accused that since he has money to give to the police she is going to let him give some to the government.
“Since you have $3,000 to give away, I am going to let you give some money to the government,” Burrell said.
As for the offence Burrell said, “It is wrong and frowned upon in Jamaica. It is disrespectful.”
While being admonished, Jian Xin He nodded in agreement with the judge as his translator explained what was being said.
