Pocket Rocket Foundation brings Christmas cheer to Waterhouse for 17th year
FOR the 17th consecutive year, Olympic and world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce — through her Pocket Rocket Foundation — brought holiday cheer to the Waterhouse community, her hometown, with the annual Christmas treat.
Held on Boxing Day, December 26, the event welcomed hundreds of children and their families from the Kingston 11 community, to a fun-filled evening featuring lots of exciting activities, entertainment and sweet treats.
This treat followed the hosting of the fourth annual Christmas treat in Ewarton, St Catherine, on Saturday December 21.
Reflecting on the event, Fraser-Pryce shared what hosting this treat for almost two decades means to her;
“The Waterhouse Christmas treat is now a tradition for me, and it holds a special and significant place in my heart. Every Boxing Day I know that is what I will be doing and it gives me tremendous joy to be able to give back to the community I grew up in by pouring into the little ones,” said Fraser-Pryce.
She added that she feels blessed to be able to share the joy of the season with the children and families from the community.
“Waterhouse is where my journey began, and every year I am here at the forefront interacting with the children. Seeing their smiles and how their little faces light up reminds me of why this tradition is so special; it is something I am looking forward to for many more years to come,” added Fraser-Pryce.
Throughout the day, with the support of sponsors, children were kept engaged with a variety of rides, delicious treats and refreshing beverages.
Digicel provided the rides, toys, snow cones and popcorn; while Grace Foods served hot dogs and kept the children hydrated with Catherine’s Peak water and Tropical Rhythms drinks.
Grace Foods also provided 100 goodie bags for the treat. Excelsior provided snack packs for the children to take home, while Nike provided branded caps, socks, water bottles, and drawstring bags for older children.
Adding to the fun and delight of the day were popsicles provided by Team Ras Built and ice cream provided by Ondre’s Auto Sales.
Additionally, Mitchell’s Sanitation Services and Sanmerna Paper Products ensured access to clean facilities, while the Hunt’s Bay police maintained safety throughout the day.
Toyota Jamaica provided transportation support for the Pocket Rocket Foundation team, while a number of volunteers ensured the well-being of the children throughout the day.
