Questions to ask at your doctors’ visits

Questions to ask at your doctors’ visits

ONCE you have scheduled all the medical appointments you need to start the new year off on the right health footing, you also need to prepare for these doctors’ visits.

“Preparation is key for getting the most of the 15-30 minutes you will have with your doctor, to maximise the outcome,” said health promotions specialist Dahlia-Leigh Cox.

Last week she suggested the practioners you should ensure that you schedule with; now, here’s a helpful guide, Cox offers, for preparing for each of these doctor visits:

Physician visit

Questions to ask:

Are my current medications still appropriate for my health?

What screenings or tests do I need based on my age and family history?

Can you help me set health goals for this year (weight, fitness, etc)?

Should I be concerned about any recent changes in my health?

Preparation: Bring a list of any health changes, medications, and recent symptoms.

Dentist appointment

Questions to ask:

How can I improve my oral health routine at home?

Are there any signs of gum disease or cavities?

Do you recommend any treatments for tooth sensitivity or whitening?

Preparation: Make sure to mention any changes in your oral health (pain, sensitivity, or changes in gums).

Eye exam

Questions to ask:

Are there any changes in my vision that I should be concerned about?

Do I need glasses or a new prescription?

Are there preventative measures I can take to protect my eye health?

Preparation: Note any vision changes or discomfort, and bring your current glasses/contact lenses.

Dermatologist visit

Questions to ask:

Are any of my moles or spots suspicious for skin cancer?

How can I prevent skin damage or ageing?

What skincare routine do you recommend for my skin type?

Preparation: Bring up any concerns about changes in your skin, moles, or areas of irritation.

Gynaecologist or urologist visit

Questions to ask:

Are there any changes to my reproductive health I should be aware of?

Do I need any tests like a Pap smear or mammogram?

What options do I have for contraception, or any questions regarding menopause, prostate health, etc?

Preparation: Be ready to discuss your menstrual history, sexual activity, or any reproductive concerns.

Mental health check-in

Questions to ask:

Can you help me manage stress or anxiety more effectively?

Are there coping mechanisms for dealing with work-life balance?

Should I consider therapy or medication for mental health?

Preparation: Note any emotional shifts or mental health changes, such as stress, anxiety, or sleep issues.

Specialist follow-ups

Questions to ask:

Are my treatment or medication options still effective?

Are there any new treatments or therapies I should consider?

What lifestyle changes can I make to improve my condition?

Preparation: Review your condition’s history and any changes since your last visit.

Nutritionist or dietitian consultation

Questions to ask:

How can I improve my diet to meet my health or fitness goals?

Should I consider supplements, and which ones?

How can I prevent or manage specific conditions like high cholesterol or diabetes through diet?

Preparation: Keep a food diary for a week prior to your appointment to discuss with the nutritionist.

Fitness and physical therapy assessment

Questions to ask:

What are the best exercises to address my specific pain or mobility issues?

How can I improve my posture and avoid injury?

What exercises will help me achieve my fitness goals this year?

Preparation: Be ready to discuss any chronic pain, injuries, or fitness limitations.

Additional tips for all visits

Bring your medical history: A list of past illnesses, surgeries, or treatments can help the doctor make informed decisions.

Prepare to discuss lifestyle: Be open about your daily habits—sleep, diet, exercise, and stress levels.

Ask about preventative measures: Inquire about things you can do to stay healthy throughout the year, such as diet changes, exercises, or lifestyle habits.
