Indecom probes fatal off-duty police shooting of woman at Clarendon hotel
The Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) says it is investigating a shooting incident involving an off-duty policeman that left a woman dead at a hotel in May Pen, Clarendon on Sunday night.
The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old bartender Jimoy Suckoo of Paradise in Westmoreland.
According to Indecom, it is reported that the cop’s service firearm was discharged which caused the injury and subsequent death. It said its probe will seek to ascertain the full circumstances and actions taken which resulted in the weapon being fired.
Indecom stated that the cop’s gun was recovered and he provided an initial account to its Investigative Team.
“The incident scene was examined and the evidential material recovered was processed and packaged. The hands of the deceased as well as the concerned officer were swabbed for gunshot residue,” Indecom said, adding that “The concerned officer was served with a Section 21 Notice, under the Independent Commission of Investigations Act, 2010, to submit a statement and an interview will be scheduled.”
Observer Online understands that the cop had initially claimed that the gun went off after he had placed it on a bed on which the woman was sleeping, fatally shooting her in the chest. However, he reportedly gave another account at the May Pen Police Station, where he claimed that he was in the process of removing his service pistol when the gun slipped from his hand and, in a bid to catch the weapon, he accidentally triggered it, fatally hitting the woman.
Suckoo is the eighth person fatally shot by a member of the security force since the start of 2025, according to Indecom.
