Harris off the mark: Trainer scores first win with Sicario Man
Trainer Alphanso Harris saddled his first-ever winner, Sicario Man, on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
Sicario Man, ridden by Aaron Chatrie, proved superior in a maiden condition race for native-bred five-year-olds and upward over 6 furlongs (1,200m), winning by a length in 1:18.2 (25.3 x 51.1 x 1:04.3). Medal Award (Tevin Foster) and Double The Cash (Jawani Forbes) filled the runner-up spots.
For Harris, who graduated from the 2023 Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) Trainers’ Training Programme, the victory was a long time coming, and he was visibly elated.
“I am very happy at the moment. This win has been a long time coming, and I am grateful for it. It takes time, and nothing is done before its time, and so this is just the start for me, and it’s a good start for 2025,” Harris told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Harris acknowledged that his stable’s progress has been hindered by a lack of horses but expressed optimism about the future.
“All I want now is some horses. I don’t have many horses, and that’s all I need going forward. As long as I have the horses, you will see more of me, in terms of winners,” he said.
The trainer pointed to the improvement in his horses’ performance since he started working with them.
“If you had noticed, the horses that I had brought to the races were horses that weren’t earning; they weren’t hitting the board. The minute I started to work on them, they started to improve and hit the board,” he explained.
“Take King Ric, for instance. After eight starts, he never hit the board with the trainer before me. The first time I ran that horse, he hit the board. I finished second and third with that horse, which is a plus,” Harris added.
