Development meet organiser predicts strong performances
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Organisers of the ‘Run For The Republic’ development track and field meet are anticipating meet records and improved performances at the second staging of the event at Herbert Morrison Technical on Saturday.
Despite entries appearing to be lower than last year’s inaugural event, Aubrey Campbell, president of Comets Track Club international — organisers of the event — said they are optimistic of yet another successful staging.
“Up to Thursday when entries closed, it seems we were behind last year’s total in terms of entries. But we are optimistic that the level of competition will be up to what we are expecting,” Campbell told the Jamaica Observer on Friday.
With all meet records being established last year, Campbell said they expect a number of those marks to be bettered.
There will be two newcomers in the primary section — Johns Hall from St James and Middlesex Corner from Hanover.
In addition to medals for the top three places in each event, there will also be awards for the outstanding male/female teams in the prep, primary categories, while the most outstanding high school team will also get a trophy.
At the meet one student from host school Herbert Morrison Technical is to be awarded a bursary in honour of the late sports journalist Hubert Lawrence.
