...Sunshine Girls target 3-0 netball series victory over South Africa’s Proteas
The stage is set, the stakes are high, and the excitement is palpable as Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls, riding high on an unassailable 2-0 series lead, are poised to make a statement when they take on South Africa in the final match of the thrilling three-Test series.
A victory this evening at the National Indoor Sports Centre would seal a resounding clean sweep of the Margaret Beckford Trophy, cementing the Sunshine Girls’ dominance over their South African counterparts. Match time is at 6:00 pm.
Head Coach Sasher-Gaye Henry-Wright has sent a clear message to the South Africans: the Jamaicans are not taking their foot off the pedal one bit.
“At no point in time do we want to give up,” she emphasised.
“We really want to press hard, keep doing rotations, and see how the players, especially our local players adapt to the environment and how well they will play at this level. We definitely are going to go a little harder, we want to push harder come the next game,” Henry-Wright, a former Sunshine Girl, told the
Jamaica Observer.
Shimona Jok, filling in for superstar Jhaniele Fowler, has been a revelation for the Jamaicans, with the goal shooter producing breathtaking performances. In the first two matches, Jok has been unstoppable, netting an impressive 73 goals from 76 attempts. She had netted 38 goals from 39 attempts in the Sunshine Girls’ 55-47 win over South Africa on January 18 and returned to score 35 from 37 in the Jamaicans’ 59-47 victory in game two on January 22.
Her accuracy and clinical finishing have been key factors in the Sunshine Girls’ successes, and she’ll no doubt be looking to continue her rich vein of form in the series finale. With Jok leading the charge, the Sunshine Girls’ attacking firepower is expected to be too hot for the South Africans to handle.
“[Shimona] Jok has been an international player, and we’re thrilled to have her back. After being away from the squad for a couple of years, she’s returned and dominated the goal shooter position in the two Test matches we have had with her so far,” Henry-Wright said.
“While we’re still working on delivering the ball to her at the right placement, her execution has been impressive. We’re delighted with her contribution and excited to have her back. With three top shooters in the world, Jamaica is eager to continue nurturing them in a positive way, which will help us achieve the results we want in the future,” she added.
But South Africa will not go down without a fight. Smarting from two consecutive defeats, they’ll be determined to salvage some pride and avoid a series whitewash. The question on everyone’s mind: Can they find a way to stop the Sunshine Girls’ juggernaut and restore some dignity to their campaign? The answer will be revealed in the thrilling series finale.
