JPL leaders seek wins today
LEADERS Mount Pleasant FA and Montego Bay United will hope to increase their margins over the field, at least for 24 hours, when they play away to Harbour View and Dunbeholden FC, respectively, in the Jamaica Premier League today.
Mount Pleasant have been on a record breaking pace of 12 straight wins and lead with 52 points as they face a Harbour View team that has won once in their last 14 games and are in relegation danger.
Montego Bay United are eight points behind in second place, have already surpassed their points and goals totals from last season, and will be seeking a second win over Dunbeholden FC who are coming off a big win but are still only three points from the drop zone.
Also today, Waterhouse FC will host Molynes United in what could be a competitive fixture, while promoted teams Chapelton Maroons and Racing United will face off.
It would be hard to bet against Mount Pleasant making it 13 wins in a row, despite Harbour View bringing in reinforcements that saw them beat Dunbeholden FC 4-1 on Sunday but eventually losing to Racing and returning to the drop zone.
Mount Pleasant are coming off a 4-1 win over Vere Phoenix United on Wednesday, and their 54 goals scored so far lead the rest of the league by 18 goals, so Harbour View could have a long day trying to keep their former player Shaquille Bradford in check.
Bradford is on 10 goals already, with Raheem Edwards and Daniel Edwards all in good, recent scoring form.
In the enforced absence of Brian Brown due to injury Shaniel Thomas has taken up the scoring responsibilities for Montego Bay United, and they will be depending on him to lead the attack today.
Johann Weatherly put his hand up for a starting spot after he delivered a goal in their midweek 3-1 win over Waterhouse FC, while midfielder Jean Claudio Rios Ferreira, based on his outstanding performance on Thursday, should be in Rodolfo Zapata’s starting team.
Dunbeholden FC rebounded from their huge loss to Harbour View to beat Chapelton in midweek and will hope they can build on this when they meet the visitors from the west today.
It could be a hard task for Dunbeholden to keep out the Montego Bay United team as they have, on paper, the second-worst defence in the league, conceding 41 goals already — second only to Vere United’s 44.
Waterhouse have lost their last two games, conceding three goals in each of them, and face a Molynes United team that are unbeaten over their last three in which they conceded just once.
Waterhouse had beaten Molynes 3-1 in the first round but if they are to get maximum points today they will have to turn their current form around.
Portmore have rediscovered some of their early season form as they are unbeaten in their last seven, won three of their last five, and should be able to beat Harbour View for the second-straight time this season.
A win is not a certainty for Portmore, however, as Harbour View were able to add some quality to their team in the January transfer period and they will be coming out swinging from the start.
Racing have won their last three games in a row, their best-ever form at this level, and face a Chapelton team that has not been experienced any sustained period of acquiring good results.
Chapelton appeared to have shaken off a run of poor results when they beat Waterhouse FC 3-0 at Drewsland on Sunday, only to go down to Dunbeholden three days later.
