Chang emphasises importance of forging strategic partnerships to fight crime
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Ministry of National Security says it remains steadfast in its commitment to actively forge strategic partnerships to fight crime and violence in the society.
Addressing a meeting of the Standing Finance Committee of the House on Thursday, National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang said crime and violence remain a complex challenge that demands a coordinated and multi agency response from the Government.
He said the partnerships are being formed with the citizenry, private sector, key government entities, including the Ministry of Education, in crime prevention and violence control; the Ministry of Labour and Social Security; the National Housing Trust as well as regional and international bodies.
“These collaborations are central to our strategy in confronting serious security challenges facing our nation,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, he said comprehensive data and crime planning strategies are producing significant and measurable results after years of significant investments.
He informed that in 2023/24, Jamaica recorded a 19 per cent reduction in murders. Additionally, for the month of February, Jamaica recorded the lowest number of murders in a month since the year 2000. Furthermore, murders are down 35 per cent from the start of the year for January and February.
“This trend we expect to continue, as the police officers in their reorganisation and deployment are showing significant gains in disruption of gangs, while simultaneously monitoring disputes in various areas,” the minister said.
“This is no coincidence. These results are the direct outcome of the strategic data-driven and targeted initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry and the JCF (Jamaica Constabulary Force). They reflect the substantial investments we have made to reinforce our security apparatus, enhance law-enforcement capabilities, improve their border control and strengthen our crime-prevention and rehabilitation progress,” he added.
Chang, who is also deputy prime minister, said the ministry will continue in its efforts to strengthen the legislative framework, improve the security infrastructure and expand social investments.
“Effective utilisation of available resources remains a cornerstone of this effort,” he emphasised.
