Trainer Gary Subratie provides the Jamaica Observer’s Supreme Racing Guide with an update on the horses currently in his stables.

TWO-YEAR-OLDS

“There are several promising young horses in the stables that I am optimistic about. These two-year-olds come from strong bloodlines and exhibit good physical attributes. However, it’s important to note that at this stage, it’s still too early to make a definitive judgment about their potential. The youngsters are currently undergoing their training routines, focusing on building their skills and acclimating to the demands of racing. Only time will reveal their true capabilities, and I remain patient as they develop.”

THREE-YEAR-OLDS

“I have a number of capable three-year-olds who have yet to compete in races for various reasons, including some challenges with starting gates and health concerns. My approach with this group is to take the necessary time to ensure they are thoroughly prepared for their racing careers. I believe that a solid foundation is crucial for their success. Based on their training progress and development, I am considering entering one or two new additions for races later in April. It’s worth mentioning that among the three-year-olds who have already raced, Sensational Soul has shown that he is not a sprinter. Instead, his strengths will emerge when we move to longer distances on the three-year-old racing calendar.”

OLDER HORSES

“Atomica is set to race this Saturday (April 5) in the 8½-furlong Ian Levy Cup, a prestigious event she won last year. Due to the unavailability of her regular rider, Dane Dawkins, who is recovering from a recent fall, Omar Walker will take the reins for this race. Atomica has been training well and is in good form, but the competition will be formidable, as there are several strong contenders from abroad. We are prepared for a challenging race.

Desert of Malibu is also getting ready to return, as she is sharpening in her training. While we are all aware of her talent, what may not be widely known is the array of issues she faces, which complicate her training process. It’s essential for us to proceed cautiously, observing her progress closely, and we are hopeful she will be ready to compete later possibly in April or in May.

I am particularly satisfied with Digital One’s progress. After a period of overcoming her previous challenges, she has bounced back and is showcasing the talent that we know she possesses. This was particularly evident in her recent victory over five furlongs. Her versatility and adaptability are promising signs, and I anticipate that we will see even better performances from her in the future.”
