Samuda outlines importance of water and Government’s commitment to ensure access by all
The annual observance of World Water Day highlights the critical role of water in communities across the island and underscores the Government’s commitment to ensuring that all Jamaicans have full access to this necessary resource.
This was stated by Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Matthew Samuda, at the recent observance at William Knibb Memorial High School in Falmouth, Trelawny.
The minister emphasised that working to ensure water accessibility and conservation for the people of the country will always be a top priority of the Government.
World Water Day, celebrated on March 22 each year, was established by the United Nations in 1993 to raise awareness about the importance of water and the urgent need to protect it.
Samuda emphasised that the day serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role water plays in sustaining life and the collective responsibility to safeguard this precious resource.
“The significance of World Water Day goes beyond celebration…; it is a call to action. We must recognise the challenges we face, including the impacts of climate change. It is imperative that we work together to ensure that every Jamaican has access to clean and safe water,” he said.
The minister noted that many regions around the world are experiencing severe water shortages, making it crucial to raise awareness about conservation practices.
In Jamaica, he said the Government is actively implementing strategies to ensure that water resources are managed sustainably, adding that the day serves as a platform to encourage individuals and organisations to take a stand against water pollution.
“Access to clean water is essential for good health. World Water Day emphasises the importance of clean water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, reinforcing the connection between water quality and public health,” Samuda said.
For his part, Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor Colin Gager, called on Jamaicans to reflect on their water usage and to adopt practices that contribute to conservation and protection.
“Every drop counts,” he emphasised, urging citizens to be mindful of their water consumption and to engage in community initiatives aimed at preserving this vital resource.
Mayor Gager said the Government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensure that all citizens have access to safe, clean water, while fostering a culture of conservation and responsible usage.
