Remembering Christ’s sacrifice…
Jamaica joined the world on Good Friday commemorating the Passion — the crucifixion, and death of Jesus Christ — in keeping with Christian tradition.
Jesus, according to Christian traditions, was accused by the Jews of claiming to be the son of God, and by the Romans for disturbing public order. In turn, Jesus was tried and condemned to be nailed to a cross.
He is believed to have died at three o’clock in the afternoon, then was taken down from the cross, wrapped in a shroud, and buried.
His ordeal is commemorated through the Stations of the Cross, a procession re-enacted through the streets of cities across the world, including Kingston, Jamaica’s capital.
Christian belief is that Good Friday recalls the ultimate act of love, sacrifice, and redemption as Jesus, the Son of God, willingly gave up His life to atone for the sins of man.
Today, Holy Saturday, is traditionally a day of mourning and silence. It ends with the Easter Vigil, during which Christians prepare for the resurrection, with Christ’s victory over death symbolised by the lighting of the Paschal Candle.
It is during this vigil that adult baptisms are often celebrated each year.
Easter Sunday (tomorrow) commemorates the resurrection of Christ when Jesus’s followers Mary Magdalene and others visited His tomb and found the stone blocking the entrance had been moved and his body gone.
