Support our own — but at what cost?
Dear Editor,
For years, many motorists, especially women, have voiced frustration at being overcharged by local mechanics for simple repairs. I’ve personally had to accompany female friends to garages, as some mechanics exploit their lack of knowledge, turning minor fixes into major expenses.
Additionally, customers are often told to purchase unnecessary parts, which are then hoarded or used elsewhere.
Beyond the inflated costs, poor customer service is another sore point. Many mechanics leave vehicles untouched for days while prioritising others, with little regard for the client’s time or needs.
In contrast, Chinese mechanics at Ferry are now gaining popularity, with glowing reviews flooding social media. While I support local enterprise, consistent exploitation has driven Jamaicans elsewhere. Unless local mechanics adopt fairer pricing and better service practices, they risk losing their clientele — and possibly their livelihoods.
