Man shot dead by cops, gun seized in St Andrew
KINGSTON, Jamaica—A man was shot dead, and a firearm was seized during a reported confrontation with the police in Seivwright Gardens, St Andrew, this morning.
Up to press time, the dead man had not been identified. The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been notified of the incident.
Reports reaching Observer Online indicate that around 12:30 am, a team from the St Andrew South Special Foot Patrol was walking along York Avenue.
On reaching the vicinity of Sam Sharpe Drive, a group of “suspicious-looking” men ran upon seeing the police. The lawmen went in pursuit of the men who reportedly opened fire at the police.
The cops, in fear for their lives, took cover, returned the fire and continued to pursue the men. They went to the rear of a premises, where a man, on seeing the police, immediately pointed a firearm in their direction.
The police again took cover and opened fire in his direction. The man fell to the ground, still clutching the firearm. The weapon was seized and found to contain a magazine with two .45 cartridges.
The unidentified man was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital, where he succumbed to his injury, the police said.
None of the police officers were injured during the incident.
