Spanish Town Police grab final Championship semi-final spot
Spanish Town Police grabbed the fourth and final spot in the semi-finals of the Jamaica Football Championships on Saturday after beating Lime Hall FC 3-1 in the winner-take-all Zone A match at Royale Lakes Complex.
Spanish Town Police’s win was their eighth of their debut season at this level. They are unbeaten in their last nine games, amassing 23 of their 26 points to finish second behind Meadforest FC (28 ).
Falmouth United (35 points) and Treasure Beach FC (30) had earlier secured both semi-final places from Zone B setting up the semi-finals slated to start this weekend.
Portlanders FC from Zone A and St Bess United from Zone B will be relegated back to parish football after finishing at the foot of their respective zones.
Lime Hall had two chances to secure their place in the semi-finals.
After losing to Meadforest FC in the penultimate round, they led going into the half-time break on Saturday when Oneil Henry scored in the third minute.
Chevon Walters equalised for Spanish Town Police in the 57th minute. And Robert Allen scored in the 77th minute to give the home team the lead before Oshane Senior sealed the win in the 88th.
Tru-Juice FC beat Progressive FC 4-1 to move past Lime Hall into third place. Tru-Juice’s first-half goals came from Leon Reynolds in the 27th minute and Damion Herrera in the 44th. Curtel Lawes extended his league leading 15th goal in the 65th minute, while Dayeshaneil Russell added the fourth in the 90th.
McNeil Foreman scored a consolation goal for Progressive FC four minutes into time added.
Portlanders FC had one last hurrah before returning to Major League football, coming from two goals down to earn a 2-2 result against Baptist Alliance for whom Orlando Ricketts scored a double (22nd and 66th minutes).
Norman Parson pulled one back for Portlanders FC in the 76th minute and Andrew Bruce tied up the game in time added.
In Zone A, Falmouth United won their league-high 11th game of the season, beating Mount Pleasant FA Juniors 3-1 at Trelawny Multipurpose Stadium.
All four goals coming in the second half.
Ziddanne Francis scored his first of the season in the 49th minute, but Mount Pleasant FA Juniors’ DeMarko Smith equalised in the 55th.
An own goal in the 60th minute and a goal from Jaheim Richards in the 90th ensured Falmouth United ended the regular season with a win.
Treasure Beach edged Petersfield FC 1-0, with Antwone Smith scoring in the 57th minute.
Reno FC battered St Bess United 10-1 with Rushawn Graham scoring a hat trick and Yasser Bacchus getting a brace.
