Plenty at stake as JPL regular season approaches end
The sixth and final play-off qualifier and the second team to be relegated are to be known this afternoon as the gruelling 39-game regular season of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) comes to an end.
After arguably the longest regular season in the history of the competition, with 14 teams playing each other three times, there are still some positions to be finalised, including the second automatic semi-finalists.
To add even more intrigue to the final week of the regular season, defending champions Cavalier FC have written to the Jamaica Football Federation’s (JFF) Competitions Committee alleging that runaway leaders and favourites Mount Pleasant FA had breached a number of rules. If Mount Pleasant FA are found guilty, there could be near seismic shifts in the points table.
Up to the time of publishing, neither the JFF nor the JPL organisers had responded to questions from the media or acknowledged receipt of the 16-page document from Cavalier.
On the field, Tivoli Gardens and Waterhouse FC, both on 55 points and separated by goal-difference, are in a race for the sixth play-off spot.
Montego Bay United and Arnett Gardens are the two teams chasing the second automatic semi-final spot to join table toppers Mount Pleasant.
At the other end of the table, four teams are separated by three points and are anxious to avoid joining demoted Vere United in the Jamaica Football Championship next season.
The maths is simple for Montego Bay United: win and take second place for a bye to the semi-finals for the first time since 2016 when they went on to win the premier league title.
Anything but a win for Montego Bay, however, would leave the door open for Arnett Gardens who could jump over them into second place if they can defeat relegation-threatened Harbour View FC.
Both Tivoli Gardens, who lost both games earlier this season to Montego Bay United, and Waterhouse, who are at home to Dunbeholden, must win if they are to get into the play-offs.
Sixth-place Tivoli Gardens (12) have a massive advantage on goal-difference to Waterhouse FC’s (0). But with Dunbeholden FC safe from relegation, they are under no pressure to go all-out for a positive result.
Humble Lion, who are hosting Mount Pleasant at Effortville Community Centre, are in the drop zone. On paper, they are the most likely team to join Vere United. They have lost both games this season against the leaders, by a 9-1 aggregate.
Chapelton Maroons, who are a point above Humble Lion, are to play Vere United at the Wembley Centre of Excellence, while Molynes United are away to Cavalier who have beaten them twice already this season.
