JPL champs Cavalier in do-or-die clash with Portmore
DEFENDING champions Cavalier FC will put their title on the line when they tackle Portmore United in their second-leg, quarter-final, Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League match at Sabina Park starting at 6:00 pm. The tie is delicately poised at 1-1.
In the second encounter at 9:00 pm, Montego Bay United take a one-goal advantage into their match against Tivoli Gardens FC, having won the first leg 2-1.
Despite being the curtain-raiser at the venue, the Cavalier versus Portmore United match is widely regarded as the feature encounter, worth going miles to see.
It’s a high-stakes game for both teams but more so for Cavalier who, if defeated, will lose not one but two titles — the JPL and the Caribbean crowns.
Only the top two teams in the JPL will be involved in the Caribbean Cup, and the third-placed team will enter the Caribbean Club Shield, won by Arnett Gardens last year.
So with that said, the pressure is mounting on Cavalier to deliver — and with the tie levelled at 1-1 it can go either way.
Cavalier will once again be defending via the likes of national defender and Captain Richard King, Christopher Ainsworth and Jeovanni Laing, to keep things tight in front of goalkeeper Vino Barclett.
Club top scorer Jalmaro Calvin, with 20 goals in second in the Golden Boot race, should get good support from Dwayne “Busy” Atkinson, Dwayne Allen and Jerome McLeary.
Former champions Portmore United have quietly gone about their business, and turned in arguably their performance of the season when they outplayed Cavalier in the first half.
But with the quality that Portmore United has, a repeat performance is not beyond them. The likes of Cardel Benbow, Romeo Guthrie, Ronaldo Robinson, Seigle Knight, Tarrick Ximines and Emelio Rosseau could upset the applecart.
Meanwhile, Montego Bay United has one foot in the semi-final as they enter the second leg leading 2-1.
The St James-based outfit is fancied to defeat Tivoli Gardens, having just that more firepower courtesy of veteran strikers Owayne Gordon and Jourdaine Fletcher.
However, the club is sweating on the fitness of the influential Shaniel Thomas who got injured in the first leg.
Tivoli Gardens, trailing 1-2, will have to go for it, not gung-ho style, but in a measured way.
Once again, the west Kingston-based team will be looking toward their prolific striker Nickalla Fuller to lead them to glory, along with the likes of Trevin Garnett, Steve Clarke, Captain Keno Simpson, tough-tackling Barrington Pryce, and Alton Lewis for victory.
If the games are tied on aggregate after 90 minutes they will play 30 minutes of extra time and utilise penalty kicks, if needed.
The winner of the Montego Bay United/Tivoli Gardens game will meet Mount Pleasant while Arnett Gardens await the winner of the Cavalier/Portmore United game.
Admission to Sabina Park is $2,000 for the general area and $4,000 for the VIP section.
