Favourites Mount Pleasant return to JPL final
Title favourites Mount Pleasant FA reached their third consecutive final of the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League beating Montego Bay United 2-1 on aggregate after battling to a 1-1 second leg draw at Sabina Park last night.
Mount Pleasant’s mercurial 16-year-old Haitian Franco Celestin, produced a moment of magic giving them a 38th-minute lead.
However, the prolific Brian Brown replied for Montego Bay United slotting home from in the 62nd minute, setting the stage for a tense finale.
Neverthless, despite their huffing and puffing, Montego Bay United could not blow down the Mount Pleasant low block wall.
It was an exciting final few minutes in which both teams got chances to score.
St Ann-based Mount Pleasant now await the winner of the Cavalier versus Arnett Gardens clash with that tie delicately locked at 1-1 from the first leg.
Despite trailing 0-1 from the first leg, Montego Bay United started the game cautiously and sensibly, knowing they had enough time.
Brown, who was given the starting nod, got the first look in at goal but his shot from 25 metres sailed wide. He was at it again and a beautiful combination play teed him up inside the box but his shot was blocked by a defender.
Mount Pleasant responded and Devonte Campbell should have given them the lead in the 34th minute.
A deflected clearance fell into his path and he rounded goalkeeper Davonnie Burton, but took too long to shoot and allowed him to recover and gather his shot on the second attempt.
But Celestin would give Mount Pleasant the lead, slipping the ball through the legs of Darnel Hosedales and from an acute angle, he somehow found space also through the legs of goalkeeper Davonnie Burton.
That goal gave Mount Pleasant a 1-0 lead but more importantly, a two-goal cushion overall.
It was a deflating goal for Montego Bay United and they went into the half-time break with their heads down with an uphill task.
Coach Paul Tegat Davis had the herculean task to lift his team and he must have said something right, because they drew level just after the hour mark.
Brian Brown tapped home in the 62nd minute after Jourdain Fletcher’s shot was parried into his path. It was a clinical goal from a top goal poacher that made it 1-1 and game on.
Mount Pleasant’s Substitute Chevaughn Walsh got the chance to kill off the game in stoppage time and immediately, Montego Bay almost scored at the other end in a mad scramble to get the ball over the line.
The final whistle was met by an air thump by coach Theodore Whitmore and he made it known it doesn’t really matter who he meets in the final.
“Mount Pleasant is in the final, it’s who wants to come and join us now,” said Whitmore. “After we scored, we were in a good position, we created chances but we allowed Montego Bay back into the game and they came at us and put us under some pressure.”
Meanwhile, it will be some soul and talent search for Montego Bay’s head coach Paul Davis after his team fought gallantly but fell short.
“We just had to come all out. It was unfortunate we gave up a soft goal. I thought we pushed back this Mount Pleasant team. I must say thanks to the guys, they really pushed out a lot tonight and the fight and energy were good,” said Davis. “We just have to build on this. Get some more younger legs and analyse the season.”
