Holness calls on labourites to protest against PNP ‘badminism’
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Prime Minister and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Leader Andrew Holness is urging party supporters to protest against what he describes as the Opposition People’s National Party’s (PNP) “hypocritical” demonstration planned for Monday.
The PNP has announced its intention to stage a peaceful protest in opposition to the appointment of Dennis Chung as chief technical director of the Financial Investigations Division (FID).
The demonstration is set to take place at the National Heroes Circle in Kingston, starting at 8:30 am.
In an advisory, the PNP noted that the FID is currently investigating Holness for illicit enrichment. Chung’s appointment, the party said, “raises serious concerns about conflict of interest, political interference, and the erosion of public trust in our anti-corruption institutions.”
However, speaking at a St James West Central constituency meeting held at the Montego Bay Community Centre on Sunday night, a fired-up Holness called on labourites to counter the PNP’s planned protest.
“Now I hear that they are going to have protest for manufactured rage and crises that don’t exist. Well, I want every labourite to protest against this hypocrisy tomorrow,” Holness declared.
“I want every labourite, wherever you are, to protest in your workplace, to protest in the market, to protest wherever you are, of the badminism of the PNP that is trying to bring down the progress of the people. Stand up labourites, stand up for justice, stand up for truth, stand up against the PNP.
“There was a time when the playbook of the PNP used to make labourites fraid, is a different labourite you looking on today. Labourites are proud of their party,” he added.
The JLP’s Marlene Malahoo Forte is a two-term member of parliament for St James West Central.
Dr Andre Haughton is the PNP’s standard bearer for the constituency.
