Haitian claims marriage amid illegal entry charge
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A Haitian man, who allegedly entered Jamaica without official authorisation, was arrested and brought before the St James Parish Court on Wednesday.
Authorities allege that Rajindel Ulysse was found in St James on June 2, following a tip-off to the Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA). Upon questioning, Ulysse reportedly admitted to arriving by boat, a voyage captained by a group of men from the Dominican Republic.
However, upon being charged with illegal entry, Ulysse claimed he had actually arrived on Jamaican shores much earlier — October 17, 2024 — and that he has since tied the knot.
A marriage certificate issued by the Registrar General’s Department confirmed that Ulysse was legally married on April 30 this year. However, his wife failed to appear in court when her name was called.
Presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton adjourned the case for mention on June 11, allowing more time for investigations and for the defence to prepare. Ulysse is being represented by attorney-at-law Chumu Paris.
The Haitian has been remanded in custody, pending further legal proceedings.
