Race heats up as European clubs eye Jamaican defender King
TOP Reggae Boyz defender Richard King could be on the move to Europe in the coming days, with several football clubs said to be battling it out for his signature.
The Cavalier FC captain has seen his stock rise over the last year with back-to-back Jamaica Premier League title wins, a Caribbean Cup triumph, as well as solid individual performances with the national senior men’s team.
The Jamaica Observer has learnt that top Scottish club St Mirren are close to agreeing on a fee for King.
When contacted by the Observer on Sunday, Cavalier head coach and Technical Director Rudolph Speid declined to comment. However, sources revealed that other clubs across Europe’s top leagues, as well as Major League Soccer (MLS) in the USA, are looking to secure his signing.
The 23-year-old has been previously linked to a host of English clubs, including Newcastle, Aston Villa and West Ham.
Scottish giants and former champions Rangers were reportedly interested in acquiring him in January, however the Observer understands serious talks never materialised.
King has experience playing in Europe after spending a season on loan at Iceland top flight club IBV where he made 17 appearances, scoring twice.
The centre back is currently on international duty and is expected to take part in Jamaica’s final group game of Concacaf, second-round, World Cup qualifying against Guatemala on Tuesday at the National Stadium.
Since making his debut in 2021 King has been a mainstay in the national team with 28 appearances. He netted his first international goal last week during the Reggae Boyz’s 3-2 win over Trinidad and Tobago during the Unity Cup in London.
