Man accused of vandalising ex-girlfriend’s home remanded
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A man accused of unleashing a wave of destruction at his ex-girlfriend’s home was remanded Wednesday, when he apperead in the St James Parish Court.
Jermaine Smith has been charged with malicious destruction of property stemming from an incident on May 22, which reportedly left the complainant shaken and her home damaged.
According to court documents, around 7:00 pm Smith showed up at the woman’s residence and began making threats from outside.
“Mi haffi come kill yuh wid a knife,” he was allegedly heard saying. What followed, prosecutors claim, was a fit of rage. Smith reportedly damaged the front gate, attempted to damage both the front and back doors, and hurled stones at the house.
The complainant formally reported the matter to the police, which eventually led to Smith’s arrest and subsequent charge.
In court, in Smith’s presence, the complainant gave a detailed account of the ordeal, revealing that at one point he kept her captive because he didn’t want her to leave.
She also stated that he took away her phone to prevent her from calling for help, or reporting the matter to the police.
When given the opportunity to speak, Smith told the court that the complainant had threatened his life. Presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton didn’t mince words. “And you did nothing about it?” she pressed.
“I did nothing about it because I was so in love with this girl and I did not want her to end up in jail,” Smith said.
When the judge asked if he still wished to pursue the relationship, Smith replied that he did, but it was up to his ex to decide.
“The answer is no; there is zero hope of you being in a relationship with her,” Judge Fairclough-Hylton declared emphatically, before turning to the complainant for confirmation. She bluntly echoed the judge’s response, ‘No!’
The judge ordered a social enquiry report and remanded Smith in custody until June 25, when he is scheduled to return to court for sentencing.
