French and English-speaking Caribbean countries rattled by earthquakes
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Several Caribbean countries were rattled by two earthquakes that occurred within an eight-hour period on Monday, according to the Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).
It said the last tremor occurred at 9:40 am (local time) and had a magnitude of 3.9. It was located at Latitude: 11.86N, Longitude: 61.05W and a depth of 17 kilometres (km).
The tremor was felt 80 km southeast of St. George’s, the Grenadian capital and 137 km north, northeast of Arima in east Trinidad and Tobago.
The SRC said that the first quake with a magnitude of 3.6 occurred at 1.31 am (local time) and was located at Latitude: 15.82N, Longitude: 60.87W and a depth of 19 km.
It was felt 81 km southeast of Roseau, the capital of Dominica, 88 km southeast of the capital Point-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe and 137 km north of Fort-de-France, the capital of the other French Caribbean island of Martinique.
The SRC said that there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the two earthquakes that rattled the islands.
