Relaxed Nugent confident of making World Champs final
JAMAICA’S Ackera Nugent says she is confident she will be in contention for a medal in the 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships this year in Tokyo, Japan, after placing second in the event during Sunday’s Bauhaus Galan at Olympiastadion in Stockholm, Sweden, the seventh stop on the Wanda Diamond League series.
The national champion and record holder clocked 12.37 seconds (1.4m/s) to finish behind American Grace Stark who ran a season’s best 12.33 to break the meet record.
A recall had forced the runners to line up a second time.
“Everything went smoothly after I was initially shaken a little from the callback. That was actually my best start so I was very pleased,” Nugent said.
“The season has been good so far — I just want to keep enjoying the sport, enjoying different countries. I’m excited to next race in Paris, and I know I can make the final in Tokyo,” the current fourth-ranked 100m hurdler in the world said.
Stark, who edged ahead of Nugent in the World Athletics rankings, broke the 12.38 meet record that was set in 2018 by her compatriot Brianna McNeal.
Nadine Visser of the Netherlands finished third in 12.49.
Jamaica’s Olympic Games record holder Roje Stona was sixth in the men’s discus throw with a best of 64.68m. Slovenia’s Kristja Ceh won with 69.73m, ahead of Sweden’s Daniel Stahl who threw a season’s best 69.53m. Australia’s Matthew Denny was third with 68.14m.
Jamaican Ackelia Smith was ninth in the women’s long jump with 6.55m (0.6m/s) as American Tara Davis-Woodhall won with a season’s best 7.05m (1.3m/s), which equalled the meet record held by Galina Chistyakova of the Slovak Republic since 1989.
Italy’s Larissa Iapichino was second with a wind-aided 6.90m (3.6m/s). American Jasmine Moore took third with a wind-aided 6.76m (2.4m/s).
