Manning’s School Class of ’85 launches $12-m project
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — The Manning’s School Class of 1985 is preparing to mark its 40th anniversary with a 10-day alumni reunion set to launch a transformative $12-million infrastructure project at the school.
The class intends to build two classrooms and upgrade the general science laboratory, all part of a broader initiative to support the seamless transition of fifth form students across eight academic streams.
“This development will significantly ease the space constraints we’ve been facing,” said chairman of the organising committee Donald Gordon. “We’re also investing in a $3-million solar installation to sustainably power the new facility.”
Activities will run from June 26 to July 5 and, in addition to the work being done on the school plant, will include a church service, family fun day, sports day, grand gala, and the official launch of the Class of 85’s group project.
Manning’s School, which currently accommodates more than 1,900 students, has long been recognised as a leading educational institution in Westmoreland. However, limited space has restricted its capacity to admit more students. The additional classrooms are expected to directly address this issue, allowing the school to better serve the growing demand for quality education in the region.
In keeping with the spirit of recognition and gratitude, the Class of 85 will also honour 40 distinguished individuals — 31 of whom are past students — and nine corporate entities for their significant contributions to the school and the wider community.
The grand gala, expected to host more than 300 guests, will be emceed by notable Manning’s alumni and media personalities Amber “DJ Amber” Crowl and Orville “Patcha Gray” Higgins. Some of the awardees include alumni and Olympian Trecia-Kaye Smith for athletics — in recognition of her contribution to school and country; educator Sheina Williams – for long and outstanding contributions; Frome Sugar Factory for employment, contributions and nation building; Bank of Nova Scotia for employment, contributions and nation building; Sandals for employment, philanthropy and nation building; GraceKennedy for employment, contributions and nation building; along with Beres Hammond for contribution, entertainment and music.
“This reunion is more than just a celebration, it’s a testament to the strong ties we built at Manning’s,” said Colin Bucknor, a member of the organising committee.
“We are thrilled to see our classmates come together once again and create new memories while honouring our school’s legacy,” he added.
