Caymanas Park weekend sees Richie Shakes claim three victories
Apprentice jockey Richie Shakes is riding high after securing three wins over the weekend at Caymanas Park.
On Saturday, June 28, 2025, Shakes claimed two victories, opening the card aboard Blade in a $200,000 Optional Claiming race that included native-bred six-year-olds (non-winners of two) and then winning the third race on Maya in a $500,000-$400,000 Optional Claiming event that included six-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three).
Blade, a six-year-old bay horse owned and trained by Donovan Clarke, won the first race by three parts of a length over 4 furlongs (800m) with a final time of 49.4 (24.1). Sudden Flight (Reyan Lewis) and Raw Liquid (Devon A Thomas) finished second and third, respectively.
In the third race, Shakes rode Maya, trained by Norman Smith, to victory over 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m). Maya came from off the pace to win by 1 ½ lengths in a time of 1:39.4, beating Expeditious (Omar Walker) and Regal and Royal (Anthony Allen).
Shakes followed up his double on Saturday with another win on Sunday, June 29, 2025, aboard Nakamura in the first race. The Errol Burke-trained colt won by 4 ½ lengths over 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m) with a final time of 1:24.0. Justin Biden (Raddesh Roman) and
Lucy In The Sky (Reyan Lewis) finished second and third, respectively.
With these wins, Shakes sits in fourth place in the jockey standings with 22 victories. Raddesh Roman leads the standings with 61 wins, followed by Shane Ellis with 29 wins and Robert Halledeen with 26 wins.
