Oliver Samuels receives keys to the city of Lauderhill
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Veteran comedian and actor Oliver Samuels was recognised on June 28 for his contribution to Jamaican culture when he received the keys to the city of Lauderhill from Mayor Denise Grant.
This took place at the One Love Comedy Show at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Centre in Florida.
“Well, this was a big surprise when I was informed, and I took it in stride. I am very appreciative of this honour, because people outside of Jamaica and the Caribbean appreciate the work that I have been doing all these years,” Samuels told Observer Online on Thursday.
Asked whether Lauderhill held any significance to him, Samuels shared, “The first time that I travelled to perform in America, I stayed at the home of the promoter, who now happens to be the father of the Mayor Denise Grant.”
Samuels, who is celebrating more than 55 years in comedy, said the highlight of his career was when he worked with his mentor, the late Louise Bennett Coverley.
“Miss Lou was my mentor, and I got the chance to work with her. That for me, was a major highlight of my career,” said Samuels, who aspired to become a schoolteacher before he got into comedy.
Mayor Denise Grant told Observer Online, “We decided to present Oliver Samuels with the keys to the city of Lauderhill because of his 55 years of being a cultural icon and for his contribution to comedy, not just in Jamaica but also in the Caribbean and abroad. And we just found it fitting to be able to celebrate him and honour him at this time.”
Mayor Grant continued, “With tears in my eyes, laughter in my soul and joy unspeakable, I spoke of this giant of a man, whose impact transcends generations. As a little girl, I found solace in his humour. God is the greatest. He makes dreams come true! I will forever be grateful. I stood on stage embodying the pride of my mother, father, grandparents and all of us! Congratulations, Oliver Samuels!”
