WICKETS GALORE!

Windies bowlers battle ferociously but Ausses edge ahead in third Test

DESPITE their disappointing first-innings reply of 143 to the number one-ranked Australia’s 225, West Indies have an outside chance
of grabbing something from the series after restricting the visitors to 99-6 in the second innings on Sunday.

Entering Monday’s third afternoon of the historic day/night third Test at Sabina Park, Australia hold an overall lead of 181 runs with four wickets intact.

Cameron Green, on 42, and Captain Pat Cummins, on 5, are the not out batsmen.

Pace bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph (not related) tore apart the Australian top order inside 21 overs, with them reeling at 69 for 6 before Green and Cummins saw off the rest off the final session without further loss.

Alzarri took the wickets of Steven Smith (five), Beau Webster (13) and Alex Carey (0) while Shamar dismissed openers Sam Konstas (0), and Usman Khawaja (14).

All-rounder Justin Greaves also got in on the act with the wicket of Travis Head for 16.

Earlier, Windies were bundled out for a mere 143 inside 53 overs, after resuming day two on 16 for 1.

Jamaican Brandon King, the team’s most productive batsman throughout the series, was hoping to push on from his overnight eight but was dismissed lbw on 14 by Josh Hazlewood in the 17th over of the innings.

Captain Roston Chase and Jamaican John Campbell seemed to be making some headway before tea with a 30-run partnership, but it was the beginning of the end for the team’s fortunes.

Similar to Australia’s collapse on Saturday, the team lost their final seven wickets for 85 runs. Chase and Campbell fell for 18 and 36, respectively.

Shai Hope (23) and Justin Greaves (18) were the only other batsmen to hit double figures as the lower order of both Alzarri, Shamar, Jayden Seales and Jomel Warrican combined for 14 runs.

Pacer Scott Boland led the way for the Aussies with 3 for 34, with Pat Cummins and Hazlewood picking up two wickets each.

The Windies are trying to avoid a whitewash after losing the first two Tests in Barbados and Grenada.
