What to Wear to a 2025 Summer Wedding

Summer 2025 is turning up the heat in temperatures and in wedding fashion. With bolder colour choices, relaxed elegance, and a refreshing mix of formality and flair, wedding guests are now expected to strike the perfect balance between showing up dressed to impress and staying true to the vibe of the venue and couple. Whether you’re heading to a breezy beach ceremony, a lush garden gathering, this is the year to embrace vibrant expression, thoughtful tailoring, and a touch of creative freedom.

This season’s standout trends are all about impact and comfort. Expect to see saturated shades like marigold, cobalt, papaya, jade, and lilac taking centre stage. Playful prints — from watercolour florals to textured motifs — are dominating both women’s and men’s wear, while lightweight fabrics like chiffon, organza, cotton, and linen blends are making sure guests look sharp without breaking a sweat. For women, ruching, pleating, sheer layers, and fringe are back in rotation, while men are stepping out in relaxed tailoring, patterned blazers, open-collar shirts, and even suit separates. Sculptural earrings, metallic bags, and stylish sunglasses are completing the look for fashion-forward attendees.

When it comes to dress codes, black-tie remains a classic option for more formal weddings, but the modern take is softer and more fluid. Women are choosing floor-length gowns in airy silks or satin, with cut-outs or cape elements for a dramatic twist. Men are wearing sleek tuxedos or dark suits with subtle pattern details and polished loafers, sometimes ditching the tie altogether for a cooler edge. For cocktail or semi-formal dress codes, women are gravitating toward bold midi dresses with dramatic sleeves, while men are pulling off pastel blazers, printed shirts, and smart trousers in stretch fabrics that allow for dancing — and sweating — in style.

For destination and beach weddings, the attire becomes even more relaxed, yet still refined. Women are opting for flowy maxi dresses or two-piece sets in tropical prints, while men are embracing linen shirts, drawstring trousers, or even tailored shorts. Footwear is appropriately casual — think: Flat sandals, espadrilles, and loafers that can handle sandy terrain. The key here is to choose breathable, natural fabrics and accessorise with texture: straw clutches, shell jewellery, and bamboo details are perfect.

Garden and backyard weddings lean into romantic ease. Women are wearing halter-neck or open-back dresses, soft floral prints, or jumpsuits in cotton. Men are keeping it dapper with lightweight button-ups, and stylish slip-ons or woven sneakers. The vibe is elevated daytime party, so colours tend to be more pastel or botanical, with delicate detailing and soft accessories.

City weddings call for a sleek, fashion-forward look. Women are embracing satin slip dresses, minimalist silhouettes, or bold statement dresses in black, white, or jewel tones. Men are often seen in modern suiting — think: Double-breasted blazers, no-tie button-downs, and designer sneakers. These events often stretch into the evening, so darker tones, elevated fabrics, and bolder jewellery help transition the look from day to night.

The time of day also plays a big role in how guests should dress. Morning or brunch weddings typically call for soft, fresh attire: Sundresses, tea-length florals, or light linen suits with minimal accessories. Afternoon weddings allow for a little more colour and flair — midis, wrap dresses, and breezy separates all work well. Evening weddings are the most glamorous, calling for satin gowns, darker palettes, elevated accessories, and sharper tailoring for men.

Whatever the setting, there are a few golden rules to follow. Always check the invitation and wedding website for clues about the dress code. Let the location and time of day guide your choices. Avoid white or ivory unless it’s explicitly approved by the couple. Choose shoes that are practical for the venue (think: block heels for grass, flats for sand, or dress sneakers for cobblestones). And above all, lean into the fun of it — this is a season for colour, movement, and unapologetic style.

Summer weddings in 2025 are as much about guest expression as they are about couple celebration. With so many diverse venues and evolving dress codes, showing up in the right look is less about tradition and more about confidence, comfort, and honouring the vibe.
