Give us a chance to attend!
Dear Editor,
Please permit me space in your newspaper to suggest a solution to the challenges with the annual Grand Gala ticket distribution system.
The Grand Gala remains a highlight of Jamaica’s Independence celebrations, showcasing our vibrant culture and national pride. However, each year, the distribution of tickets continues to raise concerns about fairness and accessibility.
Year after year, tickets are announced and distributed on the same day across select locations, many of which report being “completely out” within hours. This year was no exception. I called six of the ticket outlets, and the response was the same, we have no tickets. This was on Monday, the same day tickets became available. With distribution beginning just two working days before the event, this practice leaves many Jamaicans, like me, excluded and annoyed.
Additionally, it is troubling that ticket outlets are consistently located in urban areas, effectively sidelining those from rural communities. I live in a rural area, is the suggestion then that rural residents are not expected to attend or participate in this national celebration?
To make the process more equitable and efficient, I respectfully propose the following recommendations:
• Launch an online ticketing platform, like so many other events have done, where individuals can register and receive confirmation with a secure barcode or QR code that is scanned at the event from a phone/device or presented as a printed copy.
• Expand ticket outlets islandwide to ensure that citizens from all parishes have a fair opportunity to attend.
• Announce ticket distribution at least one week in advance to provide the public with sufficient time to plan and access tickets.
The Grand Gala belongs to all Jamaicans. Please give us an actual chance to attend.
