Mediation proves successful for man accused of furniture scam
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A man accused of fleecing a woman of $180,000 in connection with a furniture scam had his case referred to mediation, which proved successful, when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.
His bail was also extended.
Romar Thompson has been charged with obtaining money by means of false pretence.
Allegations are that Thompson advertised furniture for sale online. The complainant reportedly contacted him via WhatsApp, and an arrangement was made, after which he sent her two bank account numbers. The complainant reportedly transferred a total of $180,000 for the furniture.
After the funds were transferred, communication with Thompson reportedly ceased.
Following investigations, the money was later traced to Thompson, who allegedly admitted to the police that he was involved in the scam. He reportedly claimed that someone had asked him to facilitate the transfer of the funds, for which he received $10,000.
The matter was subsequently referred to mediation, during which an agreement was reached.
Thompson is expected to make full restitution to the complainant on or before September 15, 2025.
He is scheduled to return to court on October 7, 2025.
