Wiped clean with Swypz

Wiped clean with Swypz

What began as a niche business supplying high-quality dry wipes to dental and medical offices back in 2009 has blossomed into a multi-product operation as the Swypz brand moved to redefine what it means to stay fresh, clean, and connected to nature.

A pivotal moment came in 2016 after CEO and product conceptualiser Alanna Kirschner introduced Swypz’s first line of wet wipes to the retail market.

Drawing on years of experience and perfecting an existing formula, she sought to create a home-grown solution for healthy living—one that would also pave the way for a versatile, dual-function product that is guaranteed to leave a big impact with just one wipe.

“We produce a line of high-quality dry wipes and essential oil wet wipes for personal and household needs. We offer branded and private label solutions. The wet wipes are mindfully created with skin-friendly ingredients and excludes the use of synthetic scents that can cause sensitivities for some people,” Kirschner said as she told the Jamaica Observer about her product recently.

Far from your average supermarket product, Swypz wipes, she said, are infused with therapeutic herbal scents like lavender, geranium, and the fan-favourite lemongrass — with each one carefully designed for both the skin and senses.

Loved by consumers who value clean ingredients and everyday convenience, the wet wipes are ideal for freshening up on the go, wiping sticky toddler hands, or simply keeping your space clean without irritation. Meanwhile, the dry wipes, still a cornerstone of the brand, remain in high demand, particularly in the medical field, where they’re valued for their superior liquid absorption and strength.

Over the years it is this dual-market appeal that Kirschner said has helped Swypz to stay agile and competitive in an unpredictable business environment. Now stocked at leading retailers such as Fontana, Loshusan, John R Wong, as well as a growing network of pharmacies and beauty salons, the brand, she also said, is steadily becoming a household favourite.

“Currently we are being situated in HiLo’s islandwide and broadening our market in Portmore, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay,” Kirschner noted.

The proud entrepreneur, optimistic about her product’s growth in the market, said she is even happier about the leap of faith she took years ago to get the business started.

“I had a real estate investment which I liquidated and used some of those funds to purchase materials to get started. It was a scary moment starting out at first as sales were very slow for the first year, but I’m now more upbeat as persistence has started to pay off,” she said while noting that profits are continuously reinvested directly into the business to support product development and market expansion.

Operating with a small, close-knit team of six including full and part-time staff — the small enterprise, running on dedication, flexibility, and a shared commitment to quality, sees Kirschner wearing many hats as she oversees operations, logistics, product development and marketing.

Overcoming decades of challenges spanning unpredictable supply chains to rising costs, Kirschner said she remains committed to the goal of making quality hygiene accessible.

“Sanitation should not be a luxury,” she stated, as she outlined her most rewarding moments as being those times when customers would just walk up to her expressing their love and appreciation for the products. “These are the proudest moments for me and make all of the frustrations of doing business worth it!”

Actively working to expand her product’s reach throughout the island, the budding entrepreneur said the focus moving forward is to tap into the lucrative hotel and tourism sector where she hopes to supply travel-sized wipes.

“With a step forward every day and hopefully not too many backwards, we plan to have the variety of Swypz wipes in more retail outlets especially on the north coast and western parishes. The pandemic experience had presented many opportunities for us and these opportunities still exist,” she further said of the outlook.

The Swypz dry wipes have been around since 2009 and were mostly used by medical and dental facilities.
