Buchanan says he will unseat PM Holness in St Andrew West Central
KINGSTON, Jamaica – People’s National Party (PNP) caretaker for St Andrew West Central, Paul Buchanan has expressed confidence that he will unseat Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Leader and Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness when the ballots are counted on September 3.
At a PNP meeting in Cross Road, St Andrew, Buchanan boldly declared that St Andrew West Central is back in the column of the PNP.
“When I came to Marl Road square this evening, I know that on September 3 West Central St Andrew will be in the victory column,” he claimed.
The PNP has not tasted victory in that seat since the 1990s. Holness has been the parliamentary representative there since 1997.
Buchanan is no stranger to representational politics, as he represented St Andrew West Rural as MP between 2011 and 2016. He lost his re-election bid in 2016 to Olympian Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn.
However, Buchanan said he has the “big prize” to “take down the head one”, noting that he was being careful with his words.
“For 27 years the prime minister of this country has been the Member of Parliament in West Central St Andrew, and what has he done? One likkle degeh police station out a Olympic Way in 27 years!” Buchanan suggested.
“We gonna win? And why are we gonna win? We gonna win because our message is clear. The future is for the children, your children, PNP children, and labourite children. All of them in Tower Hill understand when we come, we will be the Member of Parliament for all the people there,” he said.
He decried the state of the schools in the constituency, describing them as “run down” and “dilapidated”.
The PNP politician promised to bring change by bringing transformation to the constituency through education.
“There is another little duppy story, where some a yuh believe it to, that a prime minister cannot lose! This time he’s gonna lose. I am gonna win! We gonna get the votes, and we get more votes than him, he has to go!” Buchanan insisted.
