Nikoali Williams jumps PB to win men’s long jump at NACAC
Nikaoli Willams has improved his chances of being named on the Jamaican team to the Tokyo World Athletics Championships next month after producing a personal best 8.16m (-0.1m/s) to win the men’s long jump on Saturday morning’s third session of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Athletics Championships at the Freeport stadium in Grand Bahama.
Jamaica added two more medals in the session as Samantha Hall won the women’s discus throw and Shawn-D Thompson was third in the men’s long jump.
Williams, who was a replacement for national champion Carey McLeod who had withdrawn from the team, improved his lifetime best from the 8.13m that he achieved at the Atlanta Games in May.
Only McLeod and 2019 World Championships gold medalist Tajay Gayle have achieved the 8.27m standard for the Tokyo Championships and Williams has put himself on contention.
American Will Williams took the silver medal with 7.96m (0.3m/s) while Shawn-D Thompson was third with 7.87m (0.2m/s).
Hall threw 61.19m to win the discus throw with American Gabi Jacobs second with 57.07m and Canada’s Julia Tunks third with 56.78m.
Meanwhile, World Championships qualifying chasing Christopher Taylor led all qualifiers into the evening’s final of the men’s 200m after he ran 20.49 seconds (-1.4m/s) in the first round. He will be joined by Kadrian Goldson who was seventh overall with 21.09 seconds (-1.4m/s).
Gabrielle Matthews won her first round heat in the women’s 200m with 23.04 seconds (0.3m/s), second best overall, while Roniesha McGregor also advanced to the final with 23.59 seconds (-2.1m/s).
