Janice Allen eyes history in St James Central
ST JAMES, Jamaica — One of more than 20 women the People’s National Party (PNP) is fielding in the September 3 general election, the party’s candidate for St James Central, Janice Allen, is convinced she has a date with history.
“I will be the first female candidate to be elected to the seat,” she told the Observer Online after being nominated Monday.
“It would be an amazing and historic achievement, something I would treasure,” she added.
Allen is going up against the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Heroy Clarke, who was nominated earlier in the day.
“I know I am going to do a good job, I know I can do it and I know the people supporting me are confident that I will do well,” she said.
Allen pointed to steps taken by the PNP to put forward more women as candidates.
“We have fielded, in this party, 22 women out of 63 constituencies and we are going to show Jamaica that the women are ready to lead and I am ready to lead this constituency,” she said.
