2025/26 NFL preseason in its final week
The National Football League (NFL) 2025/26 preseason is in its final week and, for most, the final outing of their NFL career. Each roster will be whittled down from 90 to 53 players before the start of the regular season on September 4, 2025, meaning 1,184 players will be cut, across all 32 teams. A few will land in other teams or on practice squads, but for the large majority, the NFL road ends here. Until then, 14 preseason matchups remain to be played and JustBet offers odds on the outcome of every game, with every team still pushing for a win.
The NFL pre-season is the period each year during which teams play three weekends of exhibition games before the regular season starts. The selected starters don’t normally play or play very few snaps in pre-season games, but teams normally schedule joint preseason practices, where first-team players can play against other first-team players in a controlled environment, protected from full-force contact.
Preseason games are therefore primarily used for players who are selected in the draft or players trying to make an impression, for a possible selection in a team’s 53-man roster. With that in mind, between the NFL Draft and off-season alterations, all teams have made adjustment in their roster and now need to whittle away some of the proverbial fat. Here is the third of a three-part look at some of the major moves, trades and signings that were made in the off-season, in no order of importance.
Joseph “Joey” Bosa (defensive end): 30-year-old Bosa ended his nine-year stay with the Los Angeles Chargers and joined the Buffalo Bills in the off-season, on a one-year contract. The Bills needed a game-changer to disrupt the pocket against the likes of Patrick Mahones, and the natural edge-rushing talent of Bosa, with 72 career sacks, fit the bill. However, there are concerns over his availability as he has missed 23 games over the past three seasons due to injuries, and he hasn’t had double-digit sacks in a season since 2021, a mark he hit four times in his first six seasons.
That said, when Bosa is on the field, he has the ability to get to the quarterback, and the Bills finished last season with just 39 sacks. They therefore needed to make the pass rush a priority in the off-season. There is no guarantee with Bosa, but if he can be available for most of the season, particularly in the play-offs, the signing could pay dividend, and quarterback Josh Allen could finally get over the Mahomes wall.
Justin Fields (quarterback): In six starts with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, Fields completed 65.8 per cent of his passes and rushed for 289 yards with five scores, but he was replaced in the starting role by Russell Wilson, and the Steelers refused to go back to him, despite Wilson faltering late in the season. The 26-year-old was signed by the New York Jets in the off-season to replace the outgoing Aaron Rodgers, who went to Pittsburgh, and his dual-threat skills as expected to be put to good use by new Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand. Engstrand was the passing game coordinator last season with the Detroit Lions, who led the league with 204 play-action attempts.
Fields has work to do if he desires to be among the elite quarterbacks in the NFL, but he’s still young and his dual-threat capabilities are ideal in today’s game. On the part of the Jets, they got away with a steal at $20 million a season, for a pretty good starting quarterback, and the returns are expected to be huge.
Minkah Fitzpatrick (safety): With the Pittsburgh Steelers, Fitzpatrick established himself as one of the NFL’s top safeties, racking up 516 tackles, 45 passes defended and 18 interceptions in 88 games. He was traded in June to the Miami Dolphins, the team that drafted him 11th overall in 2018 and traded him away at his request in 2019, for cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick. For reference, just two games into his second NFL season, Miami traded Fitzpatrick to Pittsburgh in exchange for a handful of draft picks.
Last season, the 28-year-old tallied 96 tackles and an interception, and he is expected to make his presence felt in Miami, with his exceptional coverage ability and multidimensional ball skills. Fitzpatrick’s numbers were down last season in Pittsburgh, but he still has remarkable instincts and could be the right ingredient to help the Dolphins notch their first play-off win since 2000.
Russell Wilson (quarterback): Wilson had 2,482 yards from 336 passing attempts last season (7.39 average yards per pass) for the Pittsburgh Steelers, along with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 games, but most of those number came in the earlier contests, as his game fell off significantly to end the season. The 36-year-old was signed by the New York Giants in the off-season and was quickly named their starter for the for the 2025/26 season.
Wilson’s game has changed significantly since his prime, dual-threat years with the Seattle Seahawks. He can still throw down field with pace and touch, but his mobility has reduced, which has impacted his playmaking abilities. He has an excellent target in wide receiver Malik Nabers but that may not be enough to keep his starting position, especially with veteran Jameis Winston and impressive rookie Jaxson Dart waiting in the wings. Wilson is past his prime but should be a good source of education for Dart, who has impressed in training camp and the preseason.
Stefon Diggs (wide receiver): Diggs, signed by the New England Patriots from the Houston Texans in March, tore his ACL back in Week 8 last season, and is reportedly ‘ahead of schedule’ in his recovery. The 31-year-old wide out posted six straight seasons of at least 1,000 receiving yards prior to his injury shortened season last year, but his production has fallen, despite being on track last year, to achieve the 1,000 yards mark in his only season with the Texans – 47 receptions for 496 yards, with three touchdowns, in only eight games.
Diggs is set to be the top receiving target for the Patriots this season, once fit to go, among a group of relatively young wide receivers. Up to last season, he still displayed the dynamic skills to separate from defenders and produce after the catch, but it is yet to be seen how his knee will hold up in breaks and route running, following the injury. Additionally, the lack of training camp and preseason practice with second-year quarterback Drake Maye will undoubtedly hurt their chemistry. The New England faithful are hoping this deal will bear fruit, and for such a talented receiver, the wish is for his quick return to previous form.
