Joe Russell takes top honours at Jamaica International Backgammon Championship
FORMER backgammon world champion Joseph Russell emerged the winner of the Jamaica International Backgammon Championship, which took place from August 21-25 at Bamboo Blu in Ocho Rios.
Russell won the world title in 1989 and has been playing the game for over 47 years, competing in tournaments all over the world. It was, however, his first time competing in Jamaica’s tournament.
“It is my first time coming here and I’ve enjoyed being here,” Russell told the Jamaica Observer after getting the better of Avi Cohen in the final.
Speaking with the Observer prior to the title showdown, Russell said the competition would be a tough one as it would feature a lot of experienced players such as two-time world champion Akiko Yazawa.
“I might be able to win but I have to get pass her first,” he said jokingly, pointing at Yazawa.
The man from Memphis, Tennessee, won a trophy and cash, among other prizes.
Russell is passionate about the game and said he is pleased with the direction in which the world is moving in formalising it.
“Backgammon is growing, especially in the United States, Europe and Middle East. It is also becoming more organised. Twenty years ago there were no federations; now there are 35 federations recognising the sport internationally and there are many competitions around the world,” said Russell.
Russell is also a founding sponsor and the chairman of the US Backgammon Federation.
The Jamaica International Backgammon competition was organised and hosted by Joey Issa, and featured both local and international players who competed in two masters jackpots, two limited jackpots, and Bazooki.
Meanwhile, Yazawa is already looking forward to the competition every year.
“This is my third year coming to the tournament and I look forward to it because every year it becomes bigger and better,” she told the Jamaica Observer.
