Road deaths up four per cent this year says ITA
There has been a four per cent increase in road fatalities this year, when compared with the similar period in 2024.
As of Friday, August 29, some 256 people had been killed in 224 fatal crashes since the start of the year. This represents eleven more fatalities this year, when compared to the similar period last year. Fatal crashes are up five per cent.
The latest statistics were revealed on Friday by the Island Traffic Authority (ITA).
Meanwhile, the ITA is reporting that motorcyclists account for 71 or 28 per cent of all fatalities since the start of the year. Private motor vehicle drivers account for 50 or 20 per cent; pedestrians account for 47 or 18 per cent; private motor vehicle passengers account for 44 or 17 per cent; and pedalcyclists account for 17 or seven per cent of fatalities since the start of the year.
Vulnerable road users, the category made up of motorcyclists, pillion passengers, pedestrians, and pedalcyclists account for 57 per cent of all fatalities since the start of the year. Overall, passengers account for 25 per cent of the road deaths.
In the meantime, males account for 84 per cent while females account for 16 per cent of all fatalities since the start of the year.
