Cosmetic gynaecology: Enhancing confidence, comfort, and care

WHEN 42-year-old Simone looked in the mirror she saw a confident, successful woman but privately, she struggled with discomfort during intimacy after childbirth. Meanwhile, 28-year-old Keisha, a fitness enthusiast, wanted to feel more confident about her appearance in certain clothing and also wanted to rectify her urinary incontinence (involuntary loss of urine). For both women, cosmetic gynaecology offered a safe, personalised solution that not only addressed physical concerns but also improved quality of life.

What is cosmetic gynaecology?

Cosmetic gynaecology is a specialised branch of women’s health that focuses on enhancing the appearance, function, and comfort of the female genital area. These procedures are not just about aesthetics, they can improve confidence, restore comfort, and address issues affecting intimacy, exercise, and daily activities.

The field includes a range of non-surgical and surgical options, all of which should be performed by a well-trained, certified obstetrician-gynaecologist(ob-gyn) who has experience in the field to ensure safety and optimal results.

Non-surgical options

These treatments are ideal for women who want to improve comfort and appearance without downtime or incisions.

• Radiofrequency tightening (ThermiVa) – Uses gentle heat to improve laxity, moisture, and sensation via improving elastin, collagen, blood flow and small nerve fibres. It also tightens the labia majora (outer lips) to give a more youthful appearance. It is also very beneficial for urinary incontinence. This is perfect for post-childbirth changes or menopause-related dryness.

• Vaginal HIFU (high-intensity focused ultrasound) – Uses ultrasound waves which, similarly to Thermiva, heats the vaginal tissues to improve collagen, elastin and blood flow to the intimate areas to improve function and incontinence issues.

• Vaginal lasers – Use laser energy within the vaginal canal (and also externally). This stimulates collagen and elastin production to enhance tone and lubrication. This also helps with incontinence.

• Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy – Uses your own growth factors to improve sensitivity and tissue health to the vagina and vulva. PRP therapy improves orgasms, sensitivity, painful intercourse, lubrication and improves incontinence.

• Exosomes – These use purified growth factors from plants and sterilised placental tissue which can be used as a stand-alone or be combined with PRP for greater results.

The beauty of all these procedures is that they can all be combined with PRP /exososme therapy for superior results.

Example, After her second child, Simone chose ThermiVa. She reported increased confidence, better intimacy, and improved bladder control — all without surgery.

Though these non-invasive procedures work well, they should be maintained yearly for ideal results.

Minimally invasive procedures

These options have quick recovery times but offer more dramatic results than non-surgical treatments.

• Labia majora augmentation – Uses fillers or fat transfer to restore volume and youthful appearance to the labia majora (outer lips).

• Minimal invasive vaginoplasty combined with PRP (MIV+P) – Surgically reapproximates the muscles at the level of the hymen to improve friction and to ascertain a greater stimulation of the G zone for better intercourse.

Surgical procedures

These are performed when significant reshaping or functional improvement is desired.

• Labiaplasty – Reshapes and reduces the inner lips for comfort, hygiene, and aesthetic balance.

• Vaginoplasty – Tightens the vaginal canal, often after multiple deliveries.

• Perineoplasty – Repairs and reshapes the area between the vagina and anus, often after childbirth trauma.

These procedures can also be combined with non-invasive procedures for superior results.

Example, Keisha opted for labiaplasty and PRP after years of discomfort in workout gear. Post-surgery she felt comfortable, confident, and pain-free during exercise. Her incontinence also resolved.

Safety comes first

While cosmetic gynaecology offers life-changing benefits, patient safety is paramount. Every woman should:

• Seek counselling and detailed consultation to understand her options.

• Have a full medical assessment to rule out underlying issues.

• Choose a certified ob-gyn with training in cosmetic gynaecology — this ensures the highest standards of care and expertise.

Empowerment through informed choice

Cosmetic gynaecology is not about chasing unrealistic ideals, it’s about addressing your concerns in a safe, supportive environment where your health and goals are the priority. Whether it’s restoring confidence after childbirth, improving comfort during intimacy, or simply feeling more at ease in your own skin, there is a tailored solution for you.

Your health, your comfort and your confidence matter. If you’re considering any of these procedures, talk to a qualified gynaecologist who is trained in cosmetic gynaecology who can guide you safely from consultation to recovery.
